” Noëls du Monde “
in Divonne-les-Bains, France
SLAG has been invited by the tourist office of Divonne-les-Bains to host a Sri Lanka day (5 December 2002) as part of their celebrations.
The idea of “Noëls du Monde” is to organise throughout the whole month of December different Christmas happenings. During 24 days, one country a day will be presented, the idea is to share and show the worlds’ different Christmas traditions, or for countries where Christmas is not celebrated the idea is to show any special day dedicated to the children. Many cultural events will take place in the town, music, dance, storytelling, exhibitions, etc. The idea is to present the country, its Christmas traditions, its traditional food, the traditional handicraft, and if possible some artistic work.
The Advents Calendar window: Each day at 7 pm an advents calendar window will be opened in some place in town. The window will be decorated with typical things from Sri Lanka, pictures, maps, etc. The idea is to have a group of people from Sri Lanka that would animate the opening of the window, by telling a little about Sri Lanka and especially about the way Christmas is celebrated. It has then been suggested that a group of Sri Lankan children would come and sing a few Christmas songs. A traditional plate of food will then be offered to the public.
This is an ideal opportunity to present Sri Lanka to the residents of Divonne-les-Bains. If any member wishes to get involved in the project, please contact Ruvan or Chinta of the Committee. We are looking for a group of individuals that are willing to prepare a Sri Lankan rice and curry meal and serve tea for 40-50 persons (all expenses will be reimbursed); members and their children who are willing to be part of the choir group and; assistance in preparing the “Sri Lanka” window. We also appreciate your feedback/suggestions as to how we can “improve” our presence.
